Opuntia, better known as prickly pear, is a genus in the cactus family, Cactaceae. There are over 90 species of of Opuntia in the United States. 

The fruit of the cactus is the pear or tuna. It's ripe when it is a deep purple color. 

Many animals eat the pads or the pears. These are an excellent source of nutrients and water. Humans can enjoy them as well, but don't forget to remove the spines!
