This is for all the children who do not go out trick-or-treating, whatever the reason. And for the friends of these children, who are sure to understand.

THIS HALLOWEEN NIGHT
(a story in two voices)

Tonight, I’ll go out.

                                                           I’d rather stay in.

My costume looks great.

                                                             This book makes me grin.

I say, “trick-or-treat”.

                                                            We turn out the lights

The candy piles up.

                                                             The popcorn’s just right.

Some goblins and ghosts.

                                                              A movie with Mom.

Carved pumpkins aglow.

                                                                It’s perfectly calm.

At Hailey’s we stop.

                                                                 A cozy big chair
My feet need a rest.

                                                                One blanket to share.

That spooky dark house

                                                                My favorite time

Is haunted, for sure.

                                                                Is making green slime.

My bag fills up fast

                                                                My dad bakes a pie.

This neighborhood rocks!

                                                                 This evening flies by!

I see the last house.

                                                                I look at the clock.

I pick up my pace.

                                                                The door, I unlock.

“Brianna, I’m here!”

                                                               “Hooray! Come inside.”

The best stop is last.

                                                                 My friend has arrived.

We sit on the floor.

                                                                 She dumps out her loot.

This Halloween night

                                                                  Is best spent with you.

So sweet and original. I love the parallel narration and the way you show how two friends can connect despite their different personalities. Such a wonderful message for kids. @AnneLipton

It looks like I forgot to post my comment before. But I love this dual perspective of kids who are different embracing and accepting each other as best friends
